The Executives' Club of Chicago completed this season's Tech Series with an interesting discussion around Social Media and Virtual Worlds.
The first panel discussion focused a bit on Web 2.0 trends like Twitter, Pownce, Tumblr and FriendFeed, but focused more on how large corporations like Allstate, Sun Microsystems and MTV utilized the appropriate Social Media solution in larger, enterprise environments.
Virtual Worlds was the next topic of the afternoon. The entire session was in Second Life - Coca-Cola and Philips presented their companies' Second Life projects and I was very surprised. Representatives from both corporations were 'in world' via their Second Life avatars.
I don't use Second Life and many of my friends don't use Second Life, but the presentation made me realize that multi-national companies that need to communicate, exchange ideas and/or recruit are some of the best candidates for a Second Life island.
The Executives' Club of Chicago includes executives of many ages and backgrounds, however, I did notice an older audience. Kudos to the Club for providing an open forum for these executives to understand new technologies, but also determine if these solutions make sense for their firms.
