Finally. A night in Chicago where the tornado sirens weren't going off or the humidity levels created their own misty dews on everyone's brow.
It was a perfect night to enjoy the Illinois I.T. Association's Outdoor reception, 'Down by the River'. The event was a mix of start ups, consultants, investors and anyone else who might want to learn more about what's going on in Illinois technology.
I ran into Jim from timeXchange (they just launched a killer partnership with a major social network) and Sachin from Dawdle. I was pleasantly surprised to meet a few new Chicago startups that have some unique ideas that just may change the way folks do business in their respective areas. Two of the companies are still a wee bit hush hush, but I can let you know about the others.
Powerlinks LLC (still looking for site URL as of this writing)
Powerlinks aims to bring the world of golf to women in a new way. Founded by University of Chicago students, Powerlinks currently partners up with local charity groups to throw events together. A terrific win/win to help a deserving organization while building the Powerlinks member base.
Ever listen to a terrific unsigned artist and think, 'If I only had a million dollars'. The Next Big Sound may be what your musical ear is looking for. Founded by Northwestern University students (some of which are still in school), The Next Big Sound is the NEXT take on music. The idea is simple: pick the artists you like and create your own 'label'. Add in artists or remove them as you wish. You've just become your own music mogul. More details can be found here. I like the idea. Instead of watching three cheesy judges on Fox tell would-be singers that they rock, you have the power to do it from the comfort of your slippers.
All of this after meeting up with Megan of XploreU (look for their major PR push for a NEW platform around September 1). I met Megan at a CEC event, but we didn't have time to chat. We finally sat down to compare notes of a) being a start up in Chicago and b) what nuances we come across as women.
If you didn't think there was alot going on in Chicagoland, guess again:). With that, I wish the organizers of Social Dev Camp, Andy Angelos and Tim Courtney, with a successful day on August 9.
Look for detailed profiles on these new sites, including those I could NOT discuss, soon.
