WIRED's NextFest kicks off in Chicago today. Local media, press and tech types gathered in Millennium Park to hear Chris Anderson's keynote - introducing the idea of free. Coming off the success of "The Long Tail", which sparked a new buzz word, Chris provided the group a bird's eye view into his thoughts behind his new book, "Free". The book will be available for all to peruse next summer and you guessed it, the e-book will be free.
In a nutshell, businesses will need to rethink their business models to accommodate the notion of offering 'Fremiums'. Chris cited Flickr's example - the bulk of users take advantage of the free accounts and a minority, say 10% have a Flickr Pro account. It's this 10% that brings in that revenue for Flickr.
This is the similar model Chris Anderson is going to use when his book, "Free" is released. The book will be available for free in its digital format and consumers that would like a hard cover book will be charged.
Check back this weekend for video and additional pictures from the event!
